Amanda and Lily were friends as children and meet again years later. Amanda says she feels nothing and does not hide it; Lily hates her stepfather and is the one who still feels. Together they plan to kill him. Cory Finley wrote it first as a play and made it as his first film. The theatrical origin shows: interiors, long takes, a locked-off camera. Olivia Cooke plays Amanda and Anya Taylor-Joy plays Lily. It was Anton Yelchin's final theatrical film, as the drug dealer; he died two weeks after shooting ended. Finley described him as keyed into what the film needed and said he loved film noir. It was shot across Massachusetts from May to June 2016 on a 5 million dollar budget. It premiered at Sundance on 21 January 2017 as Thoroughbred, Focus Features acquired it and renamed it, and it only went wide on 9 March 2018. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 87 percent and it grossed 3.2 million dollars domestically. Who it is for: viewers who like black comedy and cold two-handers. Who it is not for: anyone wanting an emotional connection. The film blocks that deliberately, and the distance shuts some people out.
