What Thrill of the Hills Is About
Richard Roy’s 2011 Quebec film is set in the summer of 1969. A twelve-year-old sets out from his village to reach Woodstock and see Jimi Hendrix, his idol. The journey starts as comedy and has underneath it the grief of a boy who has lost his father, and the film refuses to separate the two. The distance from rural Quebec to New York State turns out to be the same distance the boy is able to put between himself and his own house. Antoine Olivier Pilon plays him, with Guillaume Lemay-Thivierge, Antoine Bertrand and Evelyne Brochu in the surrounding roles. The French title means the shiver of the hills.
