Ticket to Heaven

David is a young man who joins a religious group. The group works on new recruits by keeping them hungry, keeping them without sleep and pressing on them constantly. Before long David grows thin, moves away from his own will and becomes someone who raises money for the group. His friends and family make a plan to take him by force and bring him out from under that influence. The film’s case is that this intervention saved him; that assessment is the account’s own choice, and the method is itself a form of coercion. The account shows the group from inside and records what made it attractive as well. Where a person’s capacity to decide for themselves ends is the real question. Nick Mancuso, Saul Rubinek and Meg Foster appear in Ralph L. Thomas’s hundred and eight minute Canadian film, completed in 1981.
