What Tim's Vermeer Is About
Tim Jenison is an inventor, not a painter. He wants to know how Vermeer produced images that close to photographs long before photography existed, and he decides to settle it by doing rather than arguing. He rigs a small lens and mirror, then rebuilds the entire room from The Music Lesson at full size, glass, carpet, window and all, and sits down to paint it having never painted anything. Teller's documentary is not trying to win the art-history argument. It watches a man spend years on one question.
