Titanic Waltz

Spirache Necșulescu works in the funeral trade in a provincial town. He is honest and without pretension. He has a crowded household. His wife, his mother in law, two daughters and two sons share the house. Money is tight. The family dreams of wealth. Spirache does not join that dream. One of his daughters stands with her father. Spirache’s well off brother sets off by ship. Those at home talk as if they expect the vessel to sink. Afterwards the family decides to push Spirache into politics. They press him to stand as a candidate. He finds himself inside the politics of the interwar years. By the time he sees he is being used it is too late. The film is adapted from a play by Tudor Mușatescu staged in 1932. Grigore Vasiliu-Birlic and Silvia Fulda appear in the ninety three minute film, a Romanian production Paul Călinescu finished in 1965.
