A group of young Bretons who were conscripted, who oppose the war and who have trouble taking orders are sent to Algeria. The longer they stay inside the war the more they change, until they become part of a machinery that makes killing routine. One of them refuses it and deserts, taking with him an Algerian prisoner due to be executed the next day. René Vautier’s hundred minute film is set in the Aurès mountains in April 1961, and its screenplay was built out of the testimony of hundreds of French soldiers who served in the Algerian war. It won the international critics prize at Cannes in 1972, then caused a scandal and was censored on television. Philippe Léotard and Hamid Djellouli star.
