What Tokyo Marigold Is About
Eriko is a young woman living alone who does not much know what she wants. She falls for Tamura. She knows that he is waiting for his girlfriend to come back from abroad. Even so she puts a proposal to him: let us be together for one year. The relationship starts with that limit on it, and the date of its ending is known from the beginning. The film gives this not as a love story but as a state of waiting. What it means to set a limit on yourself in advance is the real subject. The account moves in a quiet and distanced register. Rena Tanaka and Yukiyoshi Ozawa appear in Jun Ichikawa’s ninety seven minute Japanese film, completed in 2001.
