What Too Late the Hero Is About
A Pacific island during the Second World War, with a Japanese garrison at one end and Allied forces at the other. An American officer who speaks Japanese and a squad of British soldiers with no enthusiasm whatsoever for the assignment are sent behind the lines to silence a radio station, and the plan falls apart almost at once. Robert Aldrich never made war films that manufacture heroism; he made ones that wear the idea down, and the men here run because they do not want to die rather than because they are brave.
