What Torpedo Bombers Is About
In 1944 a Soviet naval air regiment stationed near Murmansk is protecting the British convoys that carry supplies to the Soviet Union under lend lease against German aircraft. A small airfield is both the front and the rear: the pilots fly a mission in the morning and, if they come back in the evening, sit down beside their families, with almost no transition between the two states. So the film is less about combat in the air than about the empty place left at the table by a man who does not return, and it mixes documentary footage into the fiction. Semyon Aranovich’s ninety six minute Soviet film was made from an unfinished story by Yuri German with a screenplay by Svetlana Karmalita. Rodion Nahapetov and Aleksei Zharkov appear; the Lenfilm production opened on 1 August 1983.
