What Toto and Carolina Is About
During a police sweep at the Villa Borghese, Antonio Caccavallo, a widowed officer, is given the job of taking young Carolina in. What follows is a journey of about a day and two people getting to know each other. Mario Monicelli's film is remembered now mainly for what the censors did to it. Submitted to the board in February 1954, it was found unacceptable on thirty five counts, on the grounds of offence to decency, morality, religion and the armed forces. Eighty two cuts were made, thirteen minutes came out of a ninety three minute film, and the references to suicide were removed. It only reached cinemas in March 1955. The original story was by Ennio Flaiano.
