What Toto and the Kings of Rome Is About
Ercole Pappalardo, chief archivist at the ministry, has been waiting years for a promotion he needs in order to keep a large family a little more comfortably. Then he finds out the promotion requires a primary school certificate, which means sitting an exam at his age. The examination scene is where the title comes from: who were the kings of Rome? Steno and Mario Monicelli directed it together, working from two Chekhov stories. It is the only film Totò and Alberto Sordi made together. It opens as comedy and arrives somewhere bitter about what bureaucracy does to a person. It had trouble with the censors of its day.
