What Towelhead Is About
Sent during the Gulf War to live in Houston with her Lebanese American father, thirteen year old Jasira is both under rigid control at home and exposed to the attention of a grown man in the neighbourhood. Alan Ball adapted Alicia Erian's novel and builds everything from the girl's point of view; Jasira understands what is happening in her own words while the audience sees it before she does, and the discomfort comes from that gap. Summer Bishil played the part at eighteen. On release the film was heavily argued over for how it depicts abuse, with some critics saying the distance was insufficient. Racism and adolescent sexuality are handled at once. Who it is for: viewers who want uncomfortable but honest stories about adolescence. Who it is not for: anyone who cannot take child abuse shown directly.
