After his father disappears, a boy is sent with his mother and sister to a political prison camp in North Korea. There he has to learn how to survive, who stands where and what can and cannot be said; as the years pass the camp becomes the only world he knows. The account holds both staying alive and the possibility of escape together, and puts a boy’s search for meaning at its centre. For the children born and raised inside the camp there is no such place as outside, and that is the heaviest part of the account. The film is made entirely in animation and chooses to imply violence rather than show it. Eiji Han Shimizu’s ninety three minute production was completed in 2020.
