Makis Arvanitakis What Tsiou Is About
Makis Papadimitratos’s 2005 Greek comedy takes place in the middle of August, in an Athens that has emptied out. Tsiou, an addict, is trying to get hold of a dose, and in the attempt he draws in a widening circle of people through his sister and her gangster husband. What results is a chain of meetings in which the pressure passes from one person to the next, nobody finding what they came for before handing the problem on. The film runs on the city in its holiday state, dazed by heat and absence, and the comedy comes precisely from the fact that nobody stops to think. Papadimitratos directs and appears in it.
