What Under the Salt Is About
A run of killings brings Commander Trujillo to Santa Rosa de la Sal, a town beside a salt mine. The victims are all young women and the bodies are coming out from under the salt. In the town there is a solitary teenager, Victor Zepeda, who works in his father's funeral home and spends his free time making crude horror films by hand. His strange behaviour turns the investigation straight towards him. Mario Muñoz's first feature was made at a time when the murders of women were a live subject in Mexico, and it leans on ground that recalls Ciudad Juárez; but it does not claim to be a documentary and it does not issue a statement. Its most original element is the way Victor's own stop-motion sequences are used as a window into his head. Those sequences were made by the actor himself.
