Xu Zheng's 2024 Chinese film is about a middle-aged programmer who loses his job. Gao Zhilei is in his forties; laid off, he is turned away from white-collar work because of his age, his savings evaporate in a lending collapse and his father's illness brings heavy bills. He ends up working as a food delivery rider. The film lays out the conditions of that work in detail: fourteen-hour days, the times the app imposes, penalties for lateness and the risks taken in traffic because of them. After its release in August 2024 it set off a large argument in China, with some defending it for finally making delivery labour visible and others attacking it for reducing the problem to a story of individual resilience. Both readings can be considered fair. Who it's for: viewers who want contemporary Chinese cinema about working conditions. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a direct critique of the system; the film looks for its solution in individual effort.
