What Uzumasa Limelight Is About
Fewer samurai films are being made and the days of the Uzumasa studio are behind it. Kamiyama has worked for many years as a kirareyaku, the actor whose job is to fall to the star’s sword and be killed on camera. One day he is given the task of teaching sword work to Satsuki, an actress just starting out. A few years later Satsuki, now a well known star, comes to visit the retired Kamiyama. The film is about a craft, and the people who carry it, being wiped off the screen. Seizo Fukumoto, who plays Kamiyama, worked for more than fifty years as a kirareyaku in real life, and this was his first leading role. Ken Ochiai’s hundred and four minute Japanese film was completed in 2014.
