What Vampyr Is About

A young man arriving in a village is left a parcel at the inn and starts meeting shadows that cannot be explained. At a nearby manor a girl has fallen ill. The film constructs no plot. The narrative works almost entirely by dream logic: the camera passes through walls, shadows move independently of their owners, and in one passage the viewer looks out from inside a coffin. The image is deliberately hazy, gauze having been stretched over the lens. Carl Theodor Dreyer directed. It was made in the first years of sound and has almost no dialogue. Who it's for: those who like experimental, atmosphere-led horror. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a story that holds together; the film does not care about that at all.
