What Vatsalyam Is About
Raghavan is a farmer who cuts into his own life to raise his younger brother Vijayakumaran, put him through school and set him on his feet. Once the brother marries into a wealthy family he finds it hard to remember where he came from, and from there the film sets inherited values against newly acquired comfort. A. K. Lohithadas wrote it; he was among the finest writers in Malayalam cinema on debt and resentment inside a family, and here too he builds the case without declaring anyone guilty. Cochin Haneefa directed, H. M. Basheer produced and S. P. Venkatesh wrote the music. Mammootty plays Raghavan and Siddique the brother, with Geetha, Sunitha, Bindu Panicker and Kaviyoor Ponnamma around them. It opened on 11 April 1993.
