What Veneno Is About
Tabaré Blanchard’s 2018 Dominican film is drawn from the life of Rafael Sánchez, the wrestler known as Jack Veneno. It follows the rise from a modest start to national hero, and gives as much weight to what happens outside the ring as inside it, particularly the friendship with José Manuel Guzmán, known as Relámpago Hernández, that hardens into a bitter rivalry. The distance between the scripted nature of professional wrestling and the entirely real meaning a country attached to this man is what the film is actually about. It is a Dominican legend told through ambition, pride and loyalty. Manny Perez plays the lead. Blanchard builds it as a story the Dominican Republic tells about itself.
