What Venom and Eternity Is About
Isidore Isou, who founded the lettrist movement, attacks conventional cinema and puts his own method in its place: he scratches and bleaches the film stock, pulls the sound track and the image track completely apart, and takes the story to pieces. He called it discrepant montage, meaning that sound and image carry no relation to each other and each runs on its own. On screen Isou walks the streets of Paris like a dandy, laying out the principles of lettrism as he goes. The film was shown unfinished at Cannes in 1951 and caused a scandal, and it took the avant-garde spectators’ prize anyway. Jean Cocteau, Jean-Louis Barrault and Blaise Cendrars appear in it.
