Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors

The director Young-soo introduces the writer Soo-jung to his friend Jae-hoon. Jae-hoon is a wealthy man who runs a gallery and is interested in her. Young-soo is interested too. Soo-jung moves between them and postpones her own decision. At one point the film starts again; the same days, the same conversations and the same meetings are told from another memory. The two accounts never quite agree. Hong Sang-soo shot the film in black and white. The narrative turns the unreliability of memory into a structure: who remembers what, who invents what, and which detail shifts in whose favour. The title refers to a work by Marcel Duchamp. Lee Eun-ju plays Soo-jung, Moon Sung-keun plays Jae-hoon, and Jung Bo-seok plays Young-soo. Who it's for: Viewers who like Hong Sang-soo, multi-perspective narrative, and minimalist structures. Who it's not for: The repeating structure tires some viewers. The men are also deliberately unappealing and the narrative offers no comment on it.
