Voices Through Time

Franco Piavoli's 1997 Italian film tells the stages of a human life within the daily rhythm of a village: childhood, youth, maturity and old age. There is almost no dialogue; the film proceeds entirely through image, the sounds of nature and music. Piavoli is among the few directors who use cinema not as a means of narration but as a form of observation. The camera records the same places in different seasons and with people of different ages; that repetition makes time itself visible. The risk is plain: nothing happens, and the film asks for the viewer's whole attention. The nature photography is extraordinary. Who it's for: viewers interested in poetic cinema and stories without dialogue. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot, or impatient viewers.
