What Waiting for Happiness Is About
Abdallah, seventeen, comes to the coastal city of Nouadhibou in Mauritania to see his mother before leaving for Europe. He grew up here, but he can no longer speak the local dialect and his western clothes mark him at once as an outsider. He spends his days looking out of the window. In the city everyone seems to be waiting to go somewhere. Abderrahmane Sissako's film screened at Cannes in 2002 in Un Certain Regard and took the FIPRESCI prize; in 2003 it won the top award at FESPACO. The telling builds no plot, giving life in the city through scenes set side by side: a boy, an elderly electrician, women waiting at a door. Migration here is not a decision but a long wait.
