We Believe You

Arnaud Dufeys's 2025 Belgian film takes place almost entirely in one room, a family court hearing. Alice stands before a judge to keep custody of her children; she has to describe what their father did to them, and she knows the weight of every sentence. The film gives the viewer no external evidence about who is telling the truth. There is only Alice's face, the judge's questions, and the way institutional language closes in on a mother. Myriem Akheddiou's performance holds the entire structure up. When the sentence in the title is spoken, and how late it comes, is the film's real subject. The runtime is kept short, which is the right decision for not diluting the tension. Who it's for: viewers drawn to single-room drama and to how legal institutions handle allegations of abuse. Who it's not for: anyone who will find a film centred on child abuse allegations, offering no relief, too heavy, or who wants plot and external action.
