Welcome Home

Pushkar Sunil Mahabal's 2020 Indian film is a psychological thriller set in a single house with an almost entirely female cast. A pregnant woman living at home is visited by several women who present themselves as officials and ask about her way of life. As the questions proceed, it becomes clear the visit has another purpose. The film was made cheaply and does not hide it; the tension comes entirely from dialogue and the enclosure of the space. Its best quality is addressing directly the social control exercised over women's bodies. Its weakness is an explanation in the final section that runs long and turns didactic. The choice of subject is uncommon in Indian independent horror. Who it's for: viewers interested in Indian independent thrillers and single-location storytelling. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content about pregnancy, miscarriage and control over the body, or expecting high production values.
