What We'll Meet in Heaven Is About
In the years of the Cultural Revolution, in a small town in southern China, Xiaolan’s parents are sent to work in a distant region and do not come back for years. The girl grows up with her grandfather; he enrols her in gymnastics, and she tries both to fit in there and not to be known by her family’s past. As the years pass, the one who cares and the one cared for change places, and the grandfather’s ageing becomes the real subject of the story. In her first film Jiang Wenli tells largely her own childhood, keeping the politics of the period in the background and looking at the relationship.
