What Marielle Knows

Frederic Hambalek's 2025 German film follows Marielle, twelve, who one morning begins reading her parents' minds. She can hear what they think and tells them so; the family's daily order collapses at once. The idea is the policing of thought. The mother and father now try to regulate not only their behaviour but what passes through their heads; that impossible effort produces comedy and grows steadily uncomfortable. The narrative never explains the fantastical element and sets no rules; the matter is not how it works but what it exposes. Julia Jentsch and Felix Kramer play the parents. The tone is dry and the humour cold. Who it's for: those who like German black comedy and conceptual setups. Who it's not for: viewers expecting sympathetic characters; the film shows every member of the family uncomfortably.
