The White Building in central Phnom Penh has been part of the city’s cultural life for decades. Samnang, twenty, grew up there and dreams of making a name for himself as a dancer and singer on Cambodia’s talent show. Once the demolition of the block becomes certain, the pressures from his family, his friends and his neighbours all land on him at the same time. Kavich Neang grew up in the building himself and had already taken the subject on in his documentary Last Night I Saw You Smiling. Piseth Chhun, who plays Samnang, won the best actor award in the Horizons section at Venice in 2021, and the film became Cambodia’s submission to the 94th Academy Awards.
