What Whitey Is About
The son of a farm labourer in the Flemish countryside is a mischievous boy everyone calls Whitey because of his fair hair. He gets up to enough trouble to exasperate his teachers at school, his family at home, the rich farmer his father works for, the neighbours and the church where he serves at the altar; punishment in those years came swiftly and hard. While telling these pranks the film also brings in the class divide in the village and the position of Flemish speakers, so it does not turn childhood into nostalgia. Robbe De Hert’s hundred and six minute Belgian film is the second screen adaptation of Ernest Claes’s classic novel and the first in colour. It was completed in 1980.
