What Wild Field Is About

The young doctor Mitya goes to work in a remote part of the Kazakh steppe. He thinks his fiancée will join him there before long. There is almost nothing there in the way of medicine; he treats whoever comes with what he has. Drink and violence are part of daily life around him. He stays all the same and builds an order of his own. His fiancée does arrive at last, but she comes to tell him she is marrying someone else. The film shows the emptiness not as landscape but as a condition. The screenplay was written in the nineties and filmed years later. Oleg Dolin and Roman Madyanov appear in Mikheil Kalatozishvili’s hundred and eight minute Russian film, completed in 2008.
