What Winchester '73 Is About
A rifle won at a shooting contest is stolen and passes from hand to hand. As the film follows the gun, another reckoning the man chasing it is after comes into view. The narrative moves in chapters: each owner brings a story and the rifle is the only thing tying them together. That structure is cited as one of the early attempts to build a western around an object. Anthony Mann directed, with James Stewart; it is the first of the westerns the two made together. It is in black and white. Before watching: the film shows Native people in the standard enemy shape of its period. The narrative's real interest is the reckoning among the white characters.
