Without Air

Katalin Moldovai's 2023 Hungarian film follows Ana, a literature teacher at a secondary school. She recommends a film to her students; it is about a relationship between two men. When a parent complains, the process grows. The school management, her colleagues and the press each step in; the narrative does not make Ana a hero and shows step by step how she is left alone. Ágnes Krasznahorkai leads. The tone is calm and the tension quiet. The production is small. Who it's for: viewers following current arguments in Hungary and school drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting resolution; the film ends without repairing the situation.
