Woman on the Beach

Hong Sang-soo's 2006 Korean film follows a director who goes to the beach on the pretext of writing a script. He begins an affair with the girlfriend of the young friend he brought along; days later she leaves and he repeats the same thing with another woman he decides resembles her. The film builds that repetition not as plot but as a diagnosis of character. Hong's storytelling is aware of how pathetic the man makes himself look; the women here are not objects of the narrative but the people who break the story he tells himself. Ko Hyun-jung's performance shifts the film's balance to the woman's side. Long drinking scenes, zooms and repeated positions are Hong's familiar equipment. Who it's for: viewers who like Hong Sang-soo's cinema and relationship stories built on repetition. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot, or who will find watching the man's selfishness wearing.
