Women

Liang Pao-erh is a married woman. One day she learns her husband is having an affair. Her life splits in two on the spot. She finds herself inside a circle of women. The group calls itself the spinsters’ club. From outside all of them look cheerful and free. Underneath that appearance there is something else. Each of them carries her own loneliness. Most of them want a man in their lives. Liang sees this slowly. Then her husband comes back full of regret. He asks forgiveness and wants to start again. This time the decision is hers. The film is Stanley Kwan’s first feature and it is built on its women. Chow Yun-Fat and Cora Miao appear in the ninety minute film, a Hong Kong production Kwan finished in 1985.
