Yaaradi Nee Mohini

Mithran Jawahar's 2008 Tamil film begins with Vasu learning that the woman he loves is engaged to his closest friend and having to accept it. The story opens as a romantic comedy and turns in the second half into a reckoning within a family. Its best qualities are the rapport between Dhanush and Nayanthara and the naturalness of the comic sections. In the second half the father's story comes forward and Raghuvaran's performance carries it; it was among the actor's last films. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music was among the most listened-to of its period. The change of genre is abrupt and the second half leans heavily on melodrama. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil romantic comedy and Dhanush's early work. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a single consistent tone, or put off by heavy melodrama.
