What Year of the Nail Is About
Molly, an American of twenty one, spends a summer in Mexico and rents a room in Diego’s house. She and the boy, who is at the beginning of adolescence, take to each other at once; he turns towards her the attention he had been giving his cousin, and she enjoys it. After Molly goes back to New York he decides to follow her. The film sets this up as a love story, but the difference in age makes it an unequal one and that has to be said. What is most striking about it is the form: the whole thing is made of still photographs. Jonas Cuaron photographed the people around him for a year and wrote the story onto those frames afterwards. The seventy eight minute Mexican film was completed in 2007.
