Yella

A German film following a woman into the world of business. Yella lives in a small town in the east. Her marriage is over and her husband's business has failed. She finds an accounting job in the west and decides to go. Before she leaves her former husband offers to drive her. There is a crash on the way; the car goes into the river. Yella climbs out, dries herself off, gets on the train and continues. The new job falls apart on the first day, but another opening appears: she starts working with a man in venture capital. The work consists of sitting in meetings, following numbers and finding the other side's weak point. Yella turns out to be good at it. Odd things happen throughout: certain sounds repeat, certain scenes do not settle, and the crash keeps returning. The form is cold and precise; hotel rooms, glass buildings and empty motorways dominate. Nina Hoss plays Yella and won a prize in Berlin for it. Christian Petzold directed. A strong example for anyone who likes European cinema and films that build tension through form. For a viewer who wants a clear explanation, the film leaves its ending uncertain.
