Craig Roberts plays Oliver in Richard Ayoade's Submarine. The single notice the British Film Institute archive holds on that film finds a deadpan approach to performance running all the way through it, and notes that in his case the facial muscles barely move at all, allowing one exception: the faint smile that comes over Oliver after he loses his virginity. By the same account the flatness does not hold the audience at the distance one might expect, because the emphasis stays on his large brown eyes, and what wins them over in the end is the film itself rather than Oliver's charm. No other page in that archive carries his name.
