Sally Hawkins

Sally Hawkins plays Jill, the tense mother of the boy narrating, in Submarine. The Film of the Month notice identifies a shortcoming in the film, the director's adults not being written as well as his adolescents, and it sets Hawkins apart at exactly that point, holding that she admirably manages to bring a sense of reality to her part. The same sentence takes the sad face of the actor playing the father for the only real clue to what that character feels, so the praise sits inside a comparison. The piece gives the character's position as well: her son is trying to rescue her from an old flame, a man got up as a spiritual guide. The 2008 Berlinale gave the actress Silver Bear to her role in Happy-Go-Lucky. Her supporting part in Blue Jasmine went onto Film Independent's list of nominees for 2014.
