What Kensuke's Kingdom Is About
Michael is on a boat sailing round the world with his family when a storm throws him and his dog overboard. They wash up on a remote island, and while he is learning how to stay alive he discovers he is not alone on it: an old Japanese man called Kensuke has been living there in secret since the Second World War, and he is not at all pleased that the boy has arrived. A threat coming to the island from outside puts the two of them on the same side. Kirk Hendry's animated film is adapted from Michael Morpurgo's children's novel, with Sally Hawkins, Cillian Murphy and Ken Watanabe among the voices. It is built on hand-drawn imagery and on the loneliness a war leaves inside a person.
