Richard Kind

Richard Kind plays Larry's uncle Arthur in Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's A Serious Man. A review in the BFI archive, having said that there is not a single flat or merely functional performance in the film, counts his Arthur the film's conceptual triumph. By that piece Arthur stands half-hidden in the bathroom in the first part, emerges as a deep enigma along with a thick notebook full of obsessive scribbling, and suffers a collapse at the end. The same piece says he may be the only character to escape the one-way sarcasm of the people who made the film, and that he does it magnificently.
