What A Bug's Life Is About
John Lasseter conceived this animation as an epic, taking the 1962 Lawrence of Arabia as his model. The decision is visible throughout: wide compositions, blades of grass shot from below like cliffs, a journey structured as a desert crossing. Anyone expecting the toy box intimacy of the previous feature gets landscape instead. The crowds are an engineering solution. Animators did not work each ant separately. Motion for four or five groups of roughly eight was produced and distributed across the scene, with eye colour, skin tone, height and weight varied algorithmically, yielding up to eight hundred ants at once. That costs the storytelling something. The colony reads as a mass, the emotional labour falls to about six characters, and the rest is texture. The staged mistakes over the closing credits were the studio’s first attempt. Lasseter had wanted them on the earlier feature and lost that argument to the calendar. Since animation produces no genuinely bad takes, each error was drawn deliberately, and fresh reels slipped into prints mid run, pulling families back a second time. Who it’s for: anyone untroubled that the ants work as a crowd rather than individuals, and satisfied by Aesop widened out with a circus troupe across ninety five minutes. Who it’s not for: viewers wanting anyone besides Flik to deepen.
