Zootopia

An animated film set in a city where animals live together. Judy is a rabbit and wants to be a police officer. Her parents are against it; rabbits do not become police and nobody has tried. She finishes the academy first in her class and is posted to the city. There she is given parking duty. Fourteen animals are missing. Judy promises her chief she will solve a case in forty-eight hours and takes the risk of losing her job. Her helper is a fox. Nick is a con artist and Judy corners him with a recording and forces him to work. From there the film is an investigation. A flower, a records office, a laboratory, a train and a museum. What the narrative is interested in is not animals but prejudice: the film shows how the idea that predators are dangerous by nature is manufactured and how an administration uses it. Judy carries that prejudice too. Halfway through she says the wrong thing at a press conference and the city divides; the narrative does not let its heroine off. The sloth at the records office is the film's best joke and uses one idea all the way through. The design of the city is inside the narrative. There are different climate districts, doors at different sizes, and a neighbourhood built to the scale of mice. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba and J. K. Simmons are among the voices. Byron Howard and Rich Moore directed. Who it is for: any age; the narrative is clear for children and says more to adults. Who it is not for: anyone who will find the analogy too flat; the film states its argument openly.
