14 films · 2 series

Agnieszka Holland learned cinema in Prague, guided by Milos Forman, Vera Chytilova and the inventiveness she found in the Czech New Wave. Andrzej Wajda called her in as his assistant on Man of Marble; communist censorship formally blocked that, but Holland wrote several scenes for the film and cast its lead. She rewrote scenes on Wajda's Danton and A Love in Germany as well. Her own film A Woman Alone was banned under martial law just as it stood ready for release. Europa Europa told the situation of the Jews in the Second World War, and In Darkness a group who survived the Holocaust hiding in the sewers of Lvov. In America she directed episodes of The Wire, Treme and House of Cards.
