Bernardo Bertolucci

Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers is, by the archive's piece, his twenty-second film. Ginette Vincendeau reports that it arrived under a faint smell of scandal: Bertolucci had accused the distributor 20th Century Fox of wanting to amputate and mutilate his film, the argument having come out of a few brief moments of nudity. Cutting those passages is ridiculous by today's standards, on her view, and yet the episode itself shows that sex is a greater preoccupation in the film than the political events going on beside it.
