Parma, the early sixties. Fabrizio is young, eager and on the left: under the influence of his teacher Cesare, engaged to a bourgeois girl, and shaken by the drowning of his friend Agostino. After the funeral he begins an affair with his aunt Gina, ten years older than he is. She is unstable, magnetic and impossible to predict, and the affair takes neither of them anywhere. What the film is really about is this: Fabrizio wants to be a revolutionary and cannot leave his class. Bernardo Bertolucci made it at twenty-two. The relationship between aunt and nephew is central and uncomfortable.
