A sugar island in the Caribbean in the mid-nineteenth century. The British agent William Walker arrives and incites the slaves to rise against Portuguese rule; his aim is not freedom but moving the sugar trade into British hands. José Dolores, the man he organises the revolt around, becomes a hero. Years later Walker is sent back, this time to crush the movement he built. Pontecorvo puts colonialism directly on screen: the master changes, the order does not. The colonial power in the film was changed from Spain to Portugal under political pressure during production.
