What War and Peace, Part I: Andrei Bolkonsky Is About
Petersburg, 1805. Pierre, the illegitimate son of a rich nobleman, is introduced to high society, while his friend Prince Andrei joins the army as aide to Kutuzov in the war against Napoleon. This is the first of four films into which Tolstoy's novel was divided, so the story does not end here. The production itself is an event: the Soviet state funded it for years, thousands of soldiers served as extras in the battle scenes, and the four parts run past seven hours together. The whole won the foreign film Oscar.
