16 August 1819, St Peter's Field in Manchester. Close to sixty thousand people gather to demand the vote and parliamentary reform, families in their best clothes among them. Cavalry ride into the crowd and the field becomes a killing ground. The name Peterloo came afterwards, a bitter joke on Waterloo. Leigh gives most of his running time not to the charge but to the months leading up to it: arguments in kitchens, speeches in halls, printers, magistrates growing frightened. The violence arrives only at the end.
